Aging in Place: Preparing the Home for Life’s Next Chapter

With housing inventory still historically low, a growing number of Baby Boomers are choosing to remain in the homes where they raised their families rather than downsizing or entering the competitive market. Aging in place allows homeowners to maintain independence, preserve community ties, and stay in a familiar environment.
To ensure the home remains safe, comfortable, and functional as needs evolve, here are key steps and modifications to consider.

Home Modifications That Support Aging in Place
Create accessibility

  • Ensure the primary bedroom, full bathroom, kitchen, and laundry are located on the main floor—or consider converting an existing room to create this layout.
  • If a main-floor layout can’t accommodate a primary suite, consider installing a homelift (not a traditional elevator) to access upper floors safely.

Improve entry and circulation

  • Add a no-step entrance or ramp.
  • Widen doorways and hallways when possible, to accommodate mobility devices.
  • Replace round doorknobs with lever handles for easier grip.

Enhance safety in bathrooms

  • Install walk-in, low-threshold or step-free showers.
  • Add grab bars, nonslip flooring, and a handheld showerhead.
  • Upgrade to comfort-height toilets.

Upgrade the kitchen for ease of use

  • Add pull-out shelves, drawer-style storage, and soft-close cabinetry.
  • Choose lever or touch-activated faucets.
  • Consider lowering a portion of the countertop to accommodate seated use.

Smart Home Features to Improve Convenience and Safety

  • Voice-activated lighting, thermostats, and appliances.
  • Video doorbells and home monitoring systems.
  • Medical alert or fall-detection systems, especially for those living alone.

Plan Ahead
Even small changes can make a meaningful difference. A certified aging-in-place specialist (CAPS) can provide a home safety assessment and guide homeowners through modifications tailored to their current and future needs.
By planning proactively, homeowners can ensure their home evolves right alongside them—supporting comfort, safety, and independence for years to come.
